Preventive Care
Your child receives ten free early detection examinations from birth to school age: the U1 to U9.
U1 to U9 includes ten examination appointments. The U1 takes place immediately after birth. Until the age of 6, your child will be regularly examined, and their development will be monitored.
During each U examination, your child will be physically examined by us, and measurements of height, weight (and head circumference) will be taken. In addition, we will ask you about your child’s physical, motor, language, and social development, and provide you with advice on age-specific topics such as accident prevention, rickets, and nutrition.
For some preventive examinations, your child’s vision capabilities will also be checked. We have various methods for this purpose.
During each preventive examination, we will, of course, check the vaccination status, advise you on vaccinations, and administer any outstanding vaccinations if necessary.
The examinations are documented in the yellow U-book.

In this way, we can detect potentially serious illnesses and developmental delays or abnormalities at an early stage. This allows us to often avoid or at least reduce the potential impacts on physical, emotional, and mental development when timely treatment or special support is provided.
- The U1 examination takes place immediately after birth in the hospital and includes the assessment of pulse, breathing, and muscle tone.
- The U2 examination takes place between the 3rd and 10th day of life and includes an assessment of the newborn reflexes and a metabolic screening. For this, a few drops of blood (from the heel) are taken from the child. Additionally, an automated hearing test of the inner ear is conducted, and your child will receive Vitamin K for the first time to prevent potential bleeding.
- During the U3 examination, which takes place in the 4th to 5th week of life, sleep and feeding behaviors are assessed, and an ultrasound examination of the hips is performed. Your child will receive the second dose of Vitamin K.
- The growth pattern and physical development of your child will be evaluated as part of the U4 (between the 3rd and 4th month) and U5 (6th to 7th month) examinations.
- We assess the transition from infancy to toddlerhood as part of the U6 examination around the first birthday. During this time, many children begin to walk and speak their first words
The subsequent U check-ups will now be conducted at intervals of one year each. During these preventative examinations, the motor, language, social, psychological, and cognitive development of your child will be assessed.
There are four additional preventative check-ups starting from the age of 7. Usually, health insurance companies cover the costs. Please ensure that your insurance covers these preventative examinations.
The educational development of your child is the focus of the U10 (ages 7 to 8) and U11 (ages 9 to 11). How is your child doing in school? If there are signs of reading-writing, arithmetic, or concentration disorders (ADHD), we will conduct or arrange for further examinations.
The youth examinations J1 (ages 12 to 14) and J2 (ages 16 to 17) focus on the puberty phase and social development. Topics such as sexuality, mental illnesses, drug and media usage, as well as leisure behavior play a significant role here.
